LOST OR FOUND A PET??? Microchip AND Tag your pets
- Make sure microchips are registered! Many found pets have microchips
that AREN'T registered to anyone except the location (vet office or shelter) where the chip was implanted. *Microchips:
after registering your microchip, call the company back a few days later to make sure they have your correct information in
their system. Be aware that microchips can move around and not be found in a scan with a wand and also there are several
different microchip companies using different wands to locate chips. If a different wand is used on your pet it
may not read the microchip. We recommend microchips and tags to be double safe your pets can get home safely,
if lost. *Microchips and Tags: Use 2 contact numbers - if
you use a home number, and are on vacation, your pet could be euthanized by the time you return home. Use a cell number
and/or give a relatives or neighbors number.*Use your address - then if a neighbor finds
your pet, they can just return it home rather than call animal control. Remember: neighbors and good samaritans
don't have microchip wands and need easily visable information to contact a pets owner. - Vaccinate
your Pet - just in case your pet ever ends up in a shelter, humane organization, or someone's
home and has contact with other pets, they should be safe from disease.
- Spay
or Neuter your Pet - we're in a pet population crisis and about 40,000 animals
will be euthanized this year in Southern Nevada. Please be part of the solution. Click on link below to see a
ch. 8 story regarding shelter overcrowding and euthansia rates(http://www.lasvegasnow.com/Global/story.asp?s=6851692)
- If your pet gets lost - put up flyers in your nieghborhood, check the websites
of the local shelters, go to the shelter and look for your pet, fill out a "lost" report at the shelter, check the
newspaper for a "found" ad, check Craigslist and other community websites, and check other humane orgs who may end
up with your pet.
- If you find a pet - If no tags, you can take animal
to a local vet and have it scanned for a chip, place a (free) "FOUND" ad in the local newspaper, if you call
Animal Control, note in the ad which shelter the animal is going to, or call the humane orgs or breed specific rescues for
assistance.
